Against Love

Posted in Essays on April 24th, 2008

So it occurred to me that I don’t post too many things that I write for school. I just finished up the semester, and for the take-home exam for my Gender & Communication class I had to write about an author from the course with whom I had disagreed. How fortunate that there was, in fact, an author with whom I heartily disagreed: Laura Kipnis, who wrote Against Love: A Polemic. The book just tears the concept of love into sad little pieces, and it doesn’t help that it’s funny and well-written to boot. It made me super depressed for a little while! Well, given the opportunity to respond, I decided to write my own polemic against hers. Isn’t that original? Isn’t that unique? Not at all obvious or trite.

So here it is! Something I wrote for school:

Nocturne (Lyrics)

Posted in Lyrics, Poetry on April 17th, 2008

Hey-o!

Here we are, a mere week before the end of the semester. Fifty pages to write between now and next Thursday! And I, the responsible graduate student, made the wise decision and decided to write lyrics instead. WHAT, YOU SAY! Well, Holly and I have been recording music with our pal Will, and songs don’t just write themselves, you know? I admit, I pieced together the lyrics from poems I’ve previously written, so there’s not much entirely new. But it works! When I have digital versions of the songs I’ll try to find a way to share them here.

Below are the lyrics to the song Nocturne!

LBJ

Posted in Entropy on April 14th, 2008

Forgive me, this may not mean anything to anyone but me. I feel the need to get the idea out, though! Hold me to it. I should write this:

I’m taking a playwriting class in the Fall where the primary assignment will be the creation of a stage adaptation of some figure from history. Coincidentally, I’m currently writing a pretty large research paper about Lyndon Johnson where I’m listening to his phone calls in 1964. Ding! I could take actual conversations and adapt them into dialogue! It could be a story of young LBJ and Dick Russell, who grow up friends together but eventually become enemies over the topic of Civil Rights. You know, like Magneto and Professor X. Right? I know, it sounds crazy now, but trust me! It’s got potential!

Coincidentally, Holly and I are pulling a pseudo all-nighter to honor our Graduate Student heritage. Education isn’t working until you fall asleep on your keyboard!

Steamboat Follies: Number One

Posted in Entropy on April 4th, 2008

La la la, been a while, etc. Who knew grad school could be such a parasite? I’ve lost almost 15 pounds since January - I’d say 7 pounds to stress, 5 pounds to healthy eating, and 3 to sheer belligerence. I wrote a twenty page paper about gender construction in fantasy novels that included the phrase, “magical male suffrage.” Maybe I’ll share it with you some time!

Meanwhile, here’s this thing Alan and I started working on a long time ago. It’s a radio play! God-willing, she’ll be recorded one day. But without further ado, the first thrilling episode of The Steamboat Follies!
