The fallen holy man – a concept that recently has attached itself to my imagination.

Why fallen? And to where?

I started thinking about him (or her) a year ago. He appears in a note from my moleskin among a list of potential plots for a radio play (none of which were made). Other contenders were: “Moth Wings and Monster Trees,” “Minor Characters at the Climactic Battle,” “and “The Boy’s Tale.”

The holy man appeared as a woman a few months later when I wrote a play, Freedom Summer, about Casey Hayden. There’s a thread which runs through her life, of losing faith (in any number of things). I’d love to speak with her one day. She’s real! She lives in Arizona and practices Zen.

Chris and I met a holy man in Jackson last January – Reverend Ed King. He taught people about Freedom in the Sixties, and he drove us around in his old Honda while teaching it to us. Sometimes he forgot to use his “preacher voice,” but what is a preacher voice? Or the difference between truth and decency? We drove for nearly five hours.

Then there’s Rumi. Do you know the poet, Rumi? He lived in the 13th Century, around modern-day Afghanistan. He was a sufi – a mystic, a teacher. I was given a book of his poetry by a dear friend in high school and never opened it until a few months ago. Which is astounding considering how well it speaks to the now-me (as opposed to the then-me). Rumi writes about ecstasy, Muhammed, Jesus, wine, sugar cane, but mostly about the Friend. As holy men go, he may not have fallen. Or he realized something about falling.

Just got back from a week in Mississippi shooting for the documentary. Here’s the treatment I wrote for it!

This week I met a man with pancreatic cancer. He has a bullet lodged in the back of his head, delivered by a Klansmen’s submachine gun in 1963. I sat down in his house, on his couch, and he taught me about using love as a weapon. I also met a woman, a grandmother, a teacher, who laughed as she told me about the death threats she received for letting voter registration workers sleep on the floor of her living room. I met a Methodist minister who was accused of helping to plot the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Hubert Humphrey, and Lyndon Johnson.

These people, native Mississippians, were members of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, and it’s their story I’ve come to the Magnolia State to piece together. It’s a story that transcends the Sixties, the South, and all the trappings we’ve come to associate with them. As Reverend Ed King reminded me, it’s a story that is spun out time and again in history: a people’s movement taking on an entrenched power structure, an ideology that collapses under the weight of its expectations. In the state of Mississippi, black citizens stood up for the radical notion that they deserved the same rights as everyone else, and when they took their fight to the national stage they were sent home with nothing.

In filming this story, we are following the same ethos established by the MFDP in 1964. We work with what we have. We capture these people and their situations as we find them. Lighting, audio, and camera work are kept as simple and transparent as possible. Music is added, not to evoke a sense of time or place, but to evoke the emotions associated with self-discovery, with speaking truth to power, with fighting against terrifying odds.

The content of these people’s lives is key. I hear time and again that they haven’t shared their stories for fear of bragging, of beating their chests and proclaiming their feats, of letting their own deeds overshadow the idea of a unified people demanding their rights. But now they are passing on. Jimmy Travis has cancer. Ed King has had a heart attack. Unita Blackwell has Alzheimer’s. We need to find these stories, preserve them, before they disappear. Freedom doesn’t need a figurehead, or a theme song, or a movement, or permission: every great movement started with people who looked around, got to work, and never stopped to worry about who would remember them.

Well well well. That gap of two and a half months is what happens when your plans work a lot better than anticipated. I plotted a crash-course in production for this semester: classes in Digital Video Production, Audio Engineering, Playwriting, and Grantwriting (to pay for it all, of course). I stayed up all night Sunday into Monday finishing the play! I’m done with everything but the grant, now. Turns out that my plan was really hard, so it’s taken me this long to resurface. I figure, now that I’ve got a little more time on my hands, I should fill this space with stuff.

So: stuff!

Here are the videos I made for my video production class. I’m pleased with them! I don’t know if it’s common knowledge that Youtube has an option to watch things in low or high quality, but I just learned this. You should watch these in high quality, since the alternative makes everything look all splotchy and bad.

http://www.youtube.com/user/liljoeyd

Bonus feature! You will find the Baghead Experiment we presented in San Diego listed under my favorite videos.
